To the category: Telescopes / Catadioptric telescopes
SIGETA StarMAK 127/1500 Alt-AZ is a Maksutov-Cassegrain catadioptric telescope on an alt-azimuth mount, designed for highly detailed observations of planets, the Moon, and double star systems. The 127 mm aperture combined with a long focal length design (F/11.8) delivers high contrast and image sharpness, which is especially important when observing objects with small angular sizes. The 1500 mm focal length with an optical tube length of approximately 37 cm allows combining compact construction with serious optical capabilities, making the telescope convenient for transportation and use in urban environments with limited space.
The Maksutov-Cassegrain optical system combines the advantages of reflector and refractor telescopes: the spherical meniscus corrector at the tube entrance effectively compensates for spherical aberration, while the secondary mirror, positioned on the inner surface of the meniscus, extends the light path and provides significant working magnifications in compact dimensions. This design minimizes chromatic aberrations and produces high-contrast images — a key advantage for planetary observations. The closed optical tube protects the optics from dust and air currents, promoting stable image quality after achieving thermal equilibrium.
The telescope enables detailed study of Solar System planets — atmospheric belts, the Great Red Spot and moon shadows on Jupiter's disc, Saturn's rings with the Cassini Division, Mars' polar caps and surface details, as well as the phases of Venus and Mercury. The lunar surface is observed with high detail: thousands of craters, mountain ranges, rilles, maria, and fine shadow elements are clearly distinguished. You can also observe planetary moons, including Jupiter's Galilean satellites along with their shadows and Titan near Saturn, double and multiple star systems with small angular separations, as well as a wide range of deep space objects — from globular and open star clusters to galaxies and nebulae from the Messier, NGC, and other catalogs. The telescope is also suitable for observing comets and asteroids.
The SIGETA StarMAK 127/1500 Alt-AZ telescope comes with two standard 1.25" (31.7 mm) eyepieces: Kellner 25 mm, providing 60x magnification for convenient object finding, observing open clusters, and general lunar viewing, and Plössl 10 mm with 150x magnification, optimal for detailed study of planets, lunar craters, and double stars.
Focusing is achieved by moving the primary mirror using the adjustment knob located on the rear of the optical tube. The 1.25" focuser barrel diameter allows the use of a wide selection of additional eyepieces and accessories. The diagonal mirror ensures comfortable observation of objects near the zenith and expands the telescope's capabilities for terrestrial observations.
The telescope includes a single-arm alt-azimuth mount with slow-motion controls in altitude and azimuth, providing precise pointing and smooth tracking of celestial objects. For initial targeting, a Red Dot collimator finder with red reticle is used. The two-section tubular tripod adjusts in height from 72 to 125 cm, features a built-in bubble level for accurate leveling, and includes a practical accessory tray.
